The Story:
My hands were sweating and my heart rate was higher than normal, I was about to walk into my annual performance review. And while I knew it should be favorable, there was an increased level of anxiety. Over the last year, I noticed that my boss had not been building into me as much as the previous year.
When my performance review was completed, I went back to my office to think about the conversation that had just taken place. My boss told me that they were going to find me someone who would be a leadership coach for me. He told me that he had led me as best as he could, but did not think that he could lead me to the next level. I was told that I had some unique gifts, and in the same way that a goalie needs a specialized goalie coach, for me to achieve my best I too would need a specialized coach.
Days turned into weeks, which turned into months and still I was no closer to having a leadership coach. In fact, other than a brief conversation where I was told that they reached out to one individual, "Don" and the words "leadership coach" were never spoken in the same sentence again. That was when I decided that if my personal and leadership development were to grow, it would be up to me to make sure that they did.
